Speakers appeal authorities to release Mirwaiz in view of Ramadan, public demand

Srinagar: Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU) Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday organised an important meeting at its head office Mirwaiz Manzil, Rajouri Kadal, on the occasion of ‘Istiqbaal-e-Ramadan’ which was presided over by the renowned Islamic scholar of the valley, Mufti Nazir Ahmad Qasmi, Sheikh-ul-Hadith of Darul Uloom Raheemiyyah.

In the meeting, the speakers while welcoming the arrival of Ramzan stressed on its sanctity, respect and fulfillment of rights of this holy month, and appealed to all Imams, scholars and preachers of Jammu and Kashmir to focus on the purification of the soul and reforming of society during the entire month of Ramadan.

They said Kashmiri society today faces serious problems like rising crime rates, moral turpitude, drug addiction, domestic violence, suicide incidents, and youth waywardness; and to tackle these, a strong awareness campaign should be conducted by informing the people through religious, reformative, da’wah and tablighi meetings so that the land of saints and scholars can be saved from becoming a breeding ground for new evils, myths and crimes.

According to a statement, the speakers in the meeting unanimously expressed their deep concern and resentment over the “illegal and arbitrary detention” of the founding head of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulema and the top religious leader of the valley Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Dr Moulvi Muhammad Umar Farooq who has been under house arrest since 5 August 2019.

They once again strongly appealed to the authorities that the restrictions imposed on Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir should be removed immediately in view of the holy month of Ramadan and public demand. They said the minbar and mihrab of the historic Central Jama Masjid Srinagar, which is the largest place of worship in Kashmir, is continuously silent due to the detention of Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir.

The speakers said that Jama Masjid Srinagar is a great centre of guidance and reform of society, and for that, Mirwaiz should be released so that he is able to fulfill his official duties like his ancestors.
