Mosque Imaam arrested for sexually assaulting 9-yr-old in Srinagar, says police

Srinagar: A mosque Imaam has been arrested for committing unnatural sex offence with a nine year old child, Srinagar police said on Tuesday.

The accused has been identified as Waseem Raja, son of Ali Mohd Malla, a resident of Noorbagh and presently working as Imaam (one who heads prayers in a mosque) at Masjid Aisha Malikaagun.

Police have registered a case in this regard under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) at Maharaj Gunj police station.

Srinagar police in a tweet said, “One Waseem Raja S/o Ali Mohd Malla R/o Noorbagh presently working as Imaam at Masjid Aisha Malikaagun has been arrested for committing unnatural sexual offence on a 09 years child. They said that FIR 30/2023 under sections 377 of IPC and 5, 6 of POCSO Act registered in Maharaj Gunj PS and further investigation has been taken up.”
