New Delhi: Veteran Congress leader Karan Singh expressed concern over the recent attacks in the Jammu region and urged the government on Thursday to revert the Jammu division back under the Nagrota Corps from Western Command in Chandigarh for improved and integrated area control.

In a statement, the former Jammu and Kashmir governor emphasised the seriousness of the recent attacks in Jammu.

“I trust that both civilian and military authorities are doing everything possible to apprehend the militants swiftly. My deepest sympathies go to the bereaved families, and I pray for the recovery of the wounded,” said Singh, son of Hari Singh, the last Maharaja of the former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir.

“I have a suggestion for Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. For many years, the Jammu Division was under the Nagrota Corps, located just thirty miles from Jammu. However, some years ago, for unclear reasons, it was moved to Western Command in Chandigarh, which is over 200 miles away,” he said.

“To ensure better and integrated control in a militancy-prone environment, I believe the old system should be reinstated. Enhancing troop strength would be beneficial for constant surveillance. Therefore, I suggest returning the Jammu Division to the Nagrota Corps,” Singh stated.

His comments come amid a surge in militant activity in Jammu region, with militants executing five attacks between June 9 and July 8.
