Kolkata: A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed at the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday, seeking an Enforcement Directorate (ED) investigation into alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital during Sandip Ghosh’s tenure as principal.

On August 9, a 31-year-old post-graduate junior doctor was raped in the same state-run R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The Division Bench of Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya accepted the petition filed by former Deputy Medical Superintendent Akhtar Ali, IANS reported.

This comes after the West Bengal government announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by a senior Indian Police Service officer to investigate the allegations.

On Wednesday, Ali also petitioned for protection, citing security concerns after coming forward against Ghosh. The single-judge Bench of Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj admitted this petition.

Ali claimed that he had alerted the state Health Department two years ago about the irregularities but received no response, prompting him to seek a central agency’s probe through the High Court.

Opposition parties have criticized the state government’s SIT as an attempt to cover up the scandal rather than uncover the truth.

Ghosh is currently on leave following a Calcutta High Court directive preventing his appointment as the head of any medical college in the state until further notice.
