Modi expresses concern over Gaza crisis during meeting with Palestinian President Abbas in New York

Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the United States on Sunday and expressed serious concern about the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Modi stressed upon India’s steadfast support for the restoration of peace and stability in the region. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York.

“Met President Mahmoud Abbas in New York. Reiterated India’s support for the early restoration of peace and stability in the region. Exchanged views on further strengthening our long-standing friendship with the people of Palestine,” Modi wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal also shared that Modi had expressed deep concern over the situation in Gaza and reaffirmed India’s continued support for the people of Palestine.

Modi is currently on a three-day official visit to the United States, arriving in New York on Saturday after attending the Quad Leaders’ Summit in Wilmington, Delaware.

On Sunday, Modi addressed a large gathering of the Indian-American community at the ‘Modi&US’ mega event in Long Island, engaging with thousands of supporters.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), citing Gaza’s Ministry of Health, reported that between October 7, 2023, and September 16 this year, over 41,000 Palestinians have been killed, with more than 95,000 injured.
