JK polls: NC-Congress alliance takes lead amid high voter turnout, BJP trails
The results of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections are set to be declared today (October 8, 2024), with vote counting starting at 8am. This marks the first Assembly elections in the Union Territory since Article 370 was revoked, and the first in 10 years.
According to exit polls, the Congress-National Conference alliance has the upper hand, with the National Conference expected to emerge as the largest party. A potential legal battle looms if no party secures a clear majority. The Congress has accused the BJP of attempting to manipulate the people’s verdict in Jammu and Kashmir by “any means necessary.”
The first phase of the election saw a voter turnout of approximately 61%, said Chief Electoral Officer PK Pole.
The second phase recorded a turnout of 57%, and the final phase on October 1, 2024, saw a turnout of 69.65%, with the polling concluding peacefully, according to the election commission.
