Israel kills 55 in Gaza in 24 hours; toll over 42,000
At least 55 more Palestinians were killed in Israeli airstrikes on Gaza, bringing the total death toll since last year to 42,065, according to the enclave’s Health Ministry on Thursday.
The ministry also reported that around 97,886 people have been injured in the ongoing attacks.
“Israeli forces killed 55 people and injured 166 others in five family massacres over the past 24 hours,” the ministry said.
It added that many remain trapped under debris and along roads, with rescuers unable to reach them.
Despite a UN Security Council resolution for an immediate ceasefire, Israel has continued its offensive on Gaza following a Hamas attack on Oct. 7, 2023.
The assault has displaced almost the entire population, with a blockade leading to extreme shortages of food, clean water, and medicine.
Mediation efforts by the US, Egypt, and Qatar for a ceasefire and prisoner exchange between Israel and Hamas have failed due to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s refusal to stop the war.
Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its actions in Gaza.
