Tesla unveils Optimus robots; Elon Musk says ‘biggest product ever’
At the Cybercab event in Los Angeles, Tesla showcased a group of humanoid Optimus robots alongside the reveal of the new Robovan.
In a video, the robots were seen performing everyday tasks like picking up packages and watering plants.
“The Optimus will walk among you,” quipped Tesla CEO Elon Musk, adding that people will be able to interact with them as they serve drinks.
Musk claimed the robots could “do anything,” mentioning tasks like walking dogs, babysitting, mowing lawns, and serving drinks, with a long-term cost estimate between $20,000 to $30,000.
“I think this will be the biggest product ever,” Musk said.
Following the presentation, livestream footage captured interactions between attendees and the robots, which were mostly waving or holding objects. One robot handed out small gift bags and played rock-paper-scissors with guests. A group of dancing robots was also displayed in an enclosed gazebo.
Musk first revealed a lighter, faster Gen 2 bot last year and said during an April earnings call that Optimus would begin performing “useful tasks” by the end of this year, with potential external sales by next year.
