New Govt in JK must prioritise demand for restoration of statehood, says Chidambaram
New Delhi: Congress leader P Chidambaram on Sunday said that the new government in Jammu and Kashmir must prioritise the demand for the restoration of statehood, with the support of the INDIA bloc.
He suggested that if the government of India fails to agree, the new government should approach the Supreme Court, as the government had previously assured the court that statehood would be restored.
In a post on X, Chidambaram criticised the Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor for assuming powers that undermine the election results. He reiterated that the Supreme Court had refrained from ruling on JK’s status reduction, based on the government’s promise to restore statehood promptly, and warned that any delay would breach this commitment and potentially be considered contempt of court.
