Rain and snow lash Kashmir, Banihal sees heaviest downpour

Srinagar: Several parts of Kashmir received moderate to heavy rainfall, with Gulmarg witnessing fresh snowfall of 20 cm, bringing chilly conditions to the region. Meanwhile, the Jammu division experienced scattered showers, with Banihal recording the highest rainfall at 76.2 mm.

According to official data, Bandipora received the highest rainfall in Kashmir at 43 mm, followed by Asham (33.5 mm), Sopore (33 mm), Wular (37 mm), and Nowgam Handwara (46.6 mm). Other areas such as Tangmarg (36.2 mm), Verinag (30.3 mm), and Kokernag (38.6 mm) also saw significant precipitation. Srinagar, the summer capital, recorded 4.4 mm of rainfall, while its airport area saw only 2.7 mm.

In the Jammu region, apart from Banihal, Udhampur (12.4 mm) and Poonch (15 mm) also received notable rainfall. However, areas like Jammu city (0.1 mm), Kathua (1.2 mm), and Katra (0.9 mm) recorded only light showers. Some parts, including RS Pura and Burmal, remained completely dry.

The fresh spell of rain and snow is expected to further drop temperatures across the Valley. Officials have advised residents, especially those in higher altitudes, to remain cautious as more precipitation is likely in the coming days.
