Ruhullah demands probe into death of man hit by police vehicle in Srinagar
Srinagar: Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, Member of Parliament from Srinagar, has called for a thorough and transparent investigation into the death of Ali Mohammad Joo, a resident of Nabdi Pora Zadibal, who was allegedly run over by a police vehicle at Khumani Chowk in Bemina on Friday, May 30.
“Deeply saddening to hear about the tragic death of Ali Mohammad Joo, reportedly run over by a police vehicle in Bemina. The family’s account raises serious concerns. A farcical inquiry will not suffice. Their demands must be met with urgency through a thorough and transparent investigation,” Ruhullah posted on X.
Joo was returning home with his daughter on a scooter when the speeding police vehicle allegedly hit them, resulting in his instant death. His daughter, recounting the harrowing incident to Maktoob Media, alleged that the van ran over her father, crushing his chest.
The family claims authorities initially tried to attribute the death to a heart attack, further fuelling anger and suspicion. An FIR was registered only after intense protests by Joo’s family and neighbours. The driver of the vehicle has since been detained, according to Kashmir Observer.
Police have booked the case under Section 281 (rash driving) and Section 125(A) (negligence endangering human life) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Local MLA from Zadibal, Tanvir Sadiq, also expressed grief, stating that he was in touch with both the bereaved family and police officials regarding the incident.
