Man drowns in Jhelum at Awantipora, body recovered after hours-long search
Awantipora: A man drowned in the Jhelum River near the Padgampora bridge in south Kashmir’s Awantipora on Tuesday, prompting a multi-agency rescue operation. His body was recovered several hours later.
Officials identified the deceased as Tariq Ahmad Ganie, a resident of Ameerabad, Tral. According to eyewitnesses, Ganie was seen struggling in the water, and bystanders made desperate attempts to save him, but were unsuccessful.
Soon after the incident, teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Jammu and Kashmir Police, and Fire & Emergency Services launched a search operation. The body was retrieved after hours of combing the river and has been handed over to authorities for medico-legal formalities. (GNS)
