Jammu: Authorities have sounded a flood alert in different parts of Samba district after heavy rainfall led to a sharp rise in the water level of the Basantar Nallah on Sunday morning.

Officials told news agency KNT  that at 8am, the water level in Basantar Nallah touched 6 feet, breaching the evacuation mark. The prescribed alert level for the stream is 4 feet, while the danger level is set at 4.5 feet and the evacuation level at 6 feet.

Given the situation, people living in low-lying areas and near riverbanks have been cautioned against venturing close to the water. The administration has urged residents to remain alert and follow safety advisories in order to avoid any untoward incidents.

Continuous rainfall in the region has added to the concern, and the district authorities are monitoring the situation closely.

Relief and rescue teams have been kept on standby in case the water level rises further.
