Israel threatens to block Gaza flotilla as humanitarian crisis deepens

The Global Sumud Flotilla, a convoy of 47 civilian boats carrying more than 500 activists, has entered the “high-risk zone” of the eastern Mediterranean, reigniting criticism of Israel’s maritime blockade on Gaza and its threats to intercept humanitarian missions.

The flotilla, which includes parliamentarians, lawyers, and Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, departed in August with the stated goal of delivering aid and breaking what campaigners call an unlawful siege of the enclave.

Organisers stated that they anticipate Israeli naval action within hours, with some fearing vessels may be forcibly boarded or sunk. Israel has branded the flotilla a “publicity stunt,” accusing certain participants of links to Hamas. Human-rights groups counter that such accusations are routinely leveled to discredit peaceful initiatives.

Italy, which initially escorted the flotilla alongside Spain, withdrew its naval support once the convoy reached the 150-nautical-mile line. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni asked the activists to abandon their mission and instead deliver supplies via Cyprus, arguing the effort endangered fragile diplomatic efforts tied to US President Donald Trump’s 20-point Gaza plan. Organisers accused Rome of “sabotage,” insisting: “The flotilla sails onwards.”

As per reports, Israel’s threats to intercept the boats in international waters violate maritime law and further erode its credibility. Humanitarian campaigners highlight that Gaza’s population of two million suffers chronic shortages of food, medicine, and clean water — conditions they say amount to collective punishment, prohibited under international conventions.

By preparing to detain, deport, or potentially endanger peaceful activists, critics argue Israel risks inflaming tensions and demonstrating that humanitarian solidarity will be met with repression. For many aboard the flotilla, the mission represents not just aid delivery but also a public indictment of policies that have left Gaza’s civilians trapped in a deepening crisis.
