Srinagar: PDP president and former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday expressed deep anguish over the devastating fire in Srinagar’s Karfali Mohalla area that reduced several houses to ashes and left multiple families homeless.

“First Ganpatyar, then Baan Mohalla, and now Karfali Mohalla within less than a month, devastating fires have engulfed the homes of the poorest of the poor,” Mehbooba said in a post on X.

“It’s heartbreaking to see people standing amidst the ashes of what was once their home.”

The PDP chief appealed to the Jammu and Kashmir administration to provide urgent financial assistance along with timber and tin sheets to help the affected families rebuild their homes.

She also urged Divisional Commissioner Kashmir and Deputy Commissioner Srinagar to extend all possible support to those affected by the blaze.

At least nine residential houses and a godown were gutted in the massive fire that broke out during the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday in Karfali Mohalla, Habba Kadal, leaving several families without shelter. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
