11 dead after terrorist attack at Jewish event in Sydney
At least 11 people were killed and 29 injured, including a child, in a shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, on Sunday during a Hanukkah celebration, in what authorities described as a terrorist attack targeting Sydney’s Jewish community.
New South Wales Police said one of the gunmen was identified as Naveed Akram from Bonnyrigg in Sydney’s south-west, international media reported. One attacker was killed at the scene, while a second suspect remains in critical condition. Police have formally declared the incident a terrorist act.
The attack occurred during a Hanukkah event attended by more than 1,000 people. A bomb disposal unit was deployed after police located a vehicle believed to contain several improvised explosive devices.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese convened an emergency national security meeting and described the shooting as a “devastating terrorist incident.” NSW Premier Chris Minns said the violence was deliberately aimed at the Jewish community, calling it particularly shocking in a country where mass shootings are rare.
Authorities said Australia’s national terror threat level would remain at “probable,” meaning intelligence agencies assess there is a roughly even chance of a terrorist attack occurring. An investigation is ongoing.
