Gulmarg to Host Khelo India Winter Games 2026 from Feb 23-26
Srinagar: The picturesque ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district will host the sixth edition of the Khelo India Winter Games (KIWG) from February 23 to 26, GoI Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Dr Mansukh Mandaviya announced on Thursday.
The four-day event, being organised in Jammu and Kashmir, is expected to see participation from athletes across the country competing in skiing, snowboarding and other winter disciplines. The KIWG, first held in 2021, has emerged as a flagship initiative to identify and groom talent in snow and ice-based sports.
Dr Mandaviya said the Games have played a crucial role in strengthening winter sports infrastructure and providing young athletes a national platform. He added that the upcoming edition would give a significant push to sports development in the Union Territory.
Preparations are underway at all venues to ensure they meet the required standards for competition.
The Sports Authority of India and the J&K Sports Council are jointly coordinating arrangements, including accommodation, training facilities and security for participants.
Director Tourism Kashmir Syed Qamar Sajad said the objective is to ensure a smooth and well-organised event that showcases Gulmarg’s potential as a winter sports destination.
He said the tourism department is putting in place hospitality services, local transport and guest facilities for visiting athletes and officials. (KNS)
