A CCTV footage shows accused being overpowered by security after he fired towards Farooq Abdullah.

Jammu: A man accused of opening fire at National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah was on Thursday remanded to five-day police custody by a court in Jammu to ascertain the motive behind the attack.

Sources told news agency Kashmir News Service that the accused, Kamal Singh Jamwal, 63, a resident of Purani Mandi, was produced before the court amid tight security.

The police sought his custody, arguing that sustained interrogation was necessary to determine if he acted alone or had links with any organisation.

Sources said the court granted five days’ police remand and directed authorities to ensure the accused undergoes a medical check-up every 24 hours.

Earlier, Jamwal was taken to a hospital for examination. “I have not done this at the behest of anyone. I have fired at him,” he told reporters.

Dr Farooq Abdullah had a narrow escape on Wednesday night when the accused allegedly opened fire at him from behind while he was leaving a marriage function at Greater Kailash on the outskirts of Jammu. (KNS)
