New Delhi: A protest by factory workers in Noida turned violent on Monday, with agitators vandalising vehicles and pelting stones as police attempted to restore order in the Phase 2 industrial area.

Workers from multiple units took to the streets demanding higher wages and better working conditions. Visuals showed damage to police vehicles, prompting authorities to deploy additional forces. The unrest also caused major traffic disruptions across key routes in the city.

Yogi Adityanath said workers must receive fair wages and industries must comply with labour laws, but warned that strict action would be taken against those inciting violence.

The protests have been building over the past few days, triggered by a recent wage hike in Haryana, where minimum pay for workers was increased by 35%. Noida workers argue they are being paid significantly less for similar work and are demanding a minimum monthly wage of ₹20,000, along with overtime pay and safer workplaces.

Several workers also raised concerns over lack of weekly offs, delayed meals and inadequate safety measures, especially for women employees.

Police said senior officers are on the ground and efforts are underway to engage with protesters while maintaining law and order. Authorities added that minimal force is being used and urged people not to spread or believe rumours.

The state labour department has been directed to hold discussions with industrial units and local officials to address the workers’ concerns. Meanwhile, officials cautioned against attempts to exploit the unrest, with the chief minister warning of a possible “conspiracy” to revive extremist elements.

District Magistrate Medha Roopam also appealed to workers to remain calm and return to work, assuring support and sharing helpline numbers for assistance.
