Donald Trump said the United States and Iran are “very close” to reaching an agreement, adding that talks could restart as early as this weekend.

His remarks came as a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah took effect, which he described as a “historic day” for Lebanon. He also expressed hope that Hezbollah would adhere to the truce.

The two sides continued exchanging strikes along the Lebanese border in the hours leading up to the ceasefire, which began at midnight local time.

Security experts have cautioned that the truce remains fragile and may only offer temporary relief. Israel has said its forces will stay in a 10km-deep security zone in southern Lebanon and has advised residents not to return yet.

Separately, the United Kingdom and France are set to co-chair a meeting on freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz later on Friday, with participation expected from around 40 countries.
