Jammu: A wanted gangster and drug smuggler was apprehended after an exchange of fire with police in the Miran Sahib area of Jammu on late Sunday night, officials said.

An official said that the police, acting on specific intelligence, laid a strategic trap near the designated area to intercept Abhineet Singh alias Nagi and his associates, an official said.

Singh, a history-sheeter wanted in over 13 pending FIRs including attempt to murder, rioting and arms smuggling, tried to break the naka (checkpoint) on a motorcycle along with an associate, the official said.

“When challenged, the accused opened fire at the police party. In a calibrated response in self-defence and to prevent public harm, the police team retaliated. Both the accused left the motorcycle and tried to escape, taking advantage of the darkness,” the official added.

During a subsequent search, one of the accused was found injured in a canal and was taken to a hospital. The other managed to flee, and a search operation is underway.
