TVK surge signals new era in Tamil Nadu, DMK suffers major setback
Tamil Nadu Assembly Election Results 2026 signal a major political shift in a state long dominated by Dravidian parties. Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has emerged as the single largest party with 107 seats and is likely to seek allies to form the government.
The ruling DMK, led by Chief Minister MK Stalin, has suffered a significant setback, winning 59 seats and leading in one more. Stalin also lost his Kolathur constituency to a TVK candidate. The AIADMK secured 47 seats, while the Congress managed five.
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar congratulated Vijay on TVK’s strong performance, calling it a decisive moment in Tamil Nadu politics.
Highlighting what could be a generational change, 30-year-old TVK candidate Rhevanth Charan from Maduravoyal is set to become one of the youngest MLAs in the state. He credited the party’s success to its grassroots approach and strong anti-incumbency sentiment against the DMK, expressing confidence that TVK will form the government.
Meanwhile, the BJP’s efforts to expand in Tamil Nadu fell flat, with the party winning just one seat despite contesting 27 constituencies as part of the AIADMK-led NDA. Bhojarajan’s victory from Udhagamandalam was its only success, while several senior leaders, including Nainar Nagenthran, L Murugan, Tamilisai Soundararajan and Vanathi Srinivasan, were defeated.
