PA of Bengal BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari killed; live rounds recovered, TMC seeks CBI probe
Kolkata: West Bengal Police on Thursday seized a vehicle linked to the investigation into the alleged murder of Chandra, personal assistant to West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari.
West Bengal Director General of Police Siddh Nath Gupta said live rounds and empty cartridges were recovered from the crime scene near Madhyamgram.
“We have initiated the investigation. The vehicle allegedly used in the crime has been seized. However, preliminary findings suggest the number plate was fake and tampered with. Live rounds and fired cartridges have been recovered from the spot. Statements of eyewitnesses are being recorded and forensic evidence is being examined. Further investigation is underway,” Gupta said.
Chandra was allegedly shot on Wednesday and later succumbed to injuries at a hospital near Madhyamgram.
The BJP described the killing as a “targeted and pre-planned” attack. Party leaders accused the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of attempting to spread fear and assert dominance in the area. They also demanded strict action against those responsible.
BJP leader Sujay Kumar Dey alleged that the attack was carefully orchestrated and politically motivated.
“The incident was completely unlawful. From Bongaon to Rajarhat and Gopalpur, the BJP has secured victories. Madhyamgram, however, has been turned into a centre of intimidation. This incident was unjustified,” Dey told reporters.
He claimed that according to information received by the party, four to five assailants on motorcycles were involved in the shooting and that several bikes participated in the attack.
Dey further alleged that Adhikari’s aide was specifically singled out.
“Suvendu Adhikari’s personal assistant and driver were both inside the vehicle, but only the personal assistant was attacked and killed. No one else was targeted,” he said.
He added that the attackers did not fire randomly but appeared to have come with a clear objective.
“They killed the person they intended to target and then stopped. Through this act, they want to create fear in Madhyamgram and project that power still lies with the TMC,” Dey alleged.
Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress condemned the incident and demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the killing.
