A five-day meeting of BRICS nations began in Indore on Tuesday, bringing together officials from member countries to discuss key issues affecting the agriculture sector, including food security, climate-friendly smart agriculture, agricultural trade and farmer welfare.

Held under India’s BRICS chairmanship, the Agriculture Working Group meeting will continue until June 11.

The inaugural session was led by Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Secretary Atish Chandra.

The discussions will cover a wide range of topics, including nutrition, digital agriculture, supply chains, research, knowledge exchange, artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and measures to facilitate international agricultural trade, officials said.

The BRICS agriculture ministers are scheduled to meet on June 12 and 13. Officials said a joint declaration will be issued once the ministers reach a consensus.

BRICS is an intergovernmental organisation comprising 11 major emerging economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia.

The conference is being held in Indore, Madhya Pradesh’s economic capital and India’s cleanest city. The event coincides with the state government’s declaration of 2026 as the ‘Year of Farmer Welfare’.
