Surankote: Two separate river incidents were reported from Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, with two girls rescued after being swept away in Poonch, while a teenage boy drowned in Budgam.

In Poonch district’s Surankote area, two girls were swept away by the Suran River but were rescued a short distance downstream by police personnel, local residents and a health team from Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Surankote. The girls were shifted to SDH Surankote for treatment.

They were identified as Ifra Kouser, daughter of Tariq, and Samina Akhter, daughter of Lal Hussain, both residents of Chandimarh. Block Medical Officer Surankote, Dr Mohd Yousaf Choudhary, said both girls were stable.

Meanwhile, in Budgam district, a 15-year-old boy drowned while bathing in the Doodhganga River in the Manchowa area. Officials said the boy had gone to the river with two other boys when he reportedly slipped into deeper waters and disappeared. Preliminary reports suggested that he did not know how to swim.

The deceased was identified as Aabid Hussain, a resident of Gool Gulab Garh. Local residents, police and rescue teams rushed to the spot and launched a search operation, which was underway at the time of filing this report. Further details were awaited.
