Baramulla: Police in north Kashmir’s Baramulla have registered a First Information Report (FIR) and launched an investigation against unidentified persons for spreading malicious and baseless rumours on social media, which claimed that terrorists had attacked a police station and opened fire on government offices in the town.

The rumours also falsely suggested that the Chief Minister had proposed the cancellation of the ongoing Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra. Police have categorically denied these claims, stating that no such attack or firing incident has taken place anywhere in the district.

In an official statement, police said the dissemination of such fabricated content appears to be a deliberate attempt to create panic, disturb public tranquillity, and undermine public confidence during the sensitive period of the yatra.

Authorities have warned that strict legal action will be taken against those found involved in creating, publishing, or circulating this disinformation, including individuals who knowingly share or forward such false content.

Police have urged members of the public to exercise restraint, remain calm, and rely only on information disseminated through official government and police channels. They have also advised against forwarding unverified content on social media, noting that such actions attract penal consequences under the law.
