At least 15 hurt as earthquake strikes eastern Afghanistan
Eastern Afghanistan was jolted by a magnitude 4.9 earthquake on Saturday that killed one person and injured at least 15 people, Local media reported.
The quake, which shook near the eastern city of Jalalabad, also caused damage to some residential homes, officials told news agencies. Local officials said that the injuries occurred in Dara-e-Noor district and the victims, who sustained no life-threatening conditions, were transferred to a regional health centre.
The country has been wracked by several powerful quakes in recent years that have brought severe devastation to communities in often remote areas.
A number of homes collapsed during this morning’s quake, leaving residents in a state of shock. The U.S. Geological Survey reported a magnitude 4.9 quake in the area, with an origin a dozen miles west of Jalalabad and at a depth of approximately six miles.
