Sri Lanka’s Jayasuriya becomes third player sanctioned in Colombo Test

Sri Lanka spinner Prabath Jayasuriya was sanctioned in the ongoing second Test between Sri Lanka and India at Colombo, making him the third player penalised for an offence during the 2nd Test and he has been handed an official reprimand for breaching the Code of Conduct of the International Cricket Council, ICC stated.

In addition to the reprimand, Jayasuriya has also been allocated 1 demerit point after striking boundaries with wedge shots with the bat while returning to the pavilion after getting dismissed by the final ball of Lanka’s first innings on Monday, the ICC said.

He was cautioned for misconduct under Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct. Abuse of ground equipment, playing equipment, clothing, ground fixtures and equipment during an international game. He has been booked on a first instance in the past two years.

Jayasuriya had confessed to the offence and accepted the punishment from match referee Andy Pycroft; hence, there was no formality of a hearing required. He joins the Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and the Sri Lankan pace bowler Asitha Fernando on the punished list in the ongoing game.

Both of them were charged a fine of 25% of the match fee with a demerit point each after they were involved in an altercation.

Sri Lanka pace bowler Asitha Fernando had smashed India opener Yashaswi Jaiswal off the field. India have won the first test at Galle by 165 runs. The Colombo test runs till Aug 27.
