Harvard study sets record for longevity of lab-grown human brain tissue

Scientists at Harvard University have kept lab-grown human brain organoids alive for nearly 7 years – shattering a previous record for how long these structures have survived in vitro and giving researchers access to a unique glimpse into a late phase of human brain growth, according to a study published in the journal Nature.

The tiny clusters of three-dimensional human brain cells lived for some seven years, nearly double the previous record of 694 days, according to a paper published recently in Nature. The brain organoids sported as many as a million brain cells and kept firing the whole time.

The group observed 34 organoids at various life stages, among them an organoid that had lived a mere six months, or the equivalent of about three months gestating in the womb, through the long, late months, using DNA methylation analysis to detect whether the cells were continuing to increase and create additional molecular evidence as time went by.

According to the research, these processes coincided, on a molecular stage, with how your brain and mine created their way across the human being developmental milestones.

But the aim isn’t exclusively how long organoids can exist. “What you have to have now,” Dr Paola Arlotta said, a primary university educator at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute who collaborated on the study, “is we now realise that you can go significantly farther. However, the researchers say that it “remains difficult to determine how a human organ might go through its complete developmental period much earlier.”

The organoids happen to have died and so they’ve all been intentionally euthanised by means of researchers’ researchers-but the hope is to produce insights into both healthy human brain improvement and how problems this sort of as autism and Alzheimer”s disease could perhaps form with this method.
