Canadian consumers shun US goods amid escalating Trump tariff row
Canadians are increasingly choosing to boycott US-made products as the trade row with the US widens, Guardian reported.
The boycott intensifying after Trump imposed 50 per cent tariffs on some Canadian products, collapsing the talks, which was met by similar tariffs on about $20bn of US goods by Prime Minister Mark Carney.
American wines and spirits have disappeared from the shelves in most provinces in Canada; Canadians cut short trips to the US, according to Agence France-Presse.
Trade issues are a reflection of the change in sentiment as the two nations’ ties grow tighter and in fact, 40 % of Canadians surveyed buy their groceries but check the destination origin, and US products are not on the list.
According to the Guardian, “Carney and his government characterise their retaliation as the defence of national interests and sovereignty.”
