Fire reported at Surdash camp in Iraq after Iranian drone strikes

Local media reported significant material damage but no injuries after a fire broke out at a camp in Surdash in Iraq’s Kurdistan region as a result of Iranian drone strikes on an Iranian Kurdish opposition group.

Local media broadcast footage of flames and smoke rising from the camp after the attack. The attack comes after a string of Iranian strikes on camps of Iranian Kurdish opposition groups in northern Iraq.

Rudaw TV  reported two drones hit the Surdash camp in Sulaimani province in May, causing material damage but no casualties. Amjad Hossein Panahi, head of relations for the Komala of the Toilers of Kurdistan in Erbil, said: “Surdash camp was attacked by two drones, and there was only material damage.”

Families connected to the Komala Movement, an Iranian Kurdish opposition group, are housed in the camp, which is in Sulaimani’s Dukan district. Since the wider conflict involving Iran began, the Kurdistan region has been the target of numerous missile and drone attacks, with several of those attacks targeting Iranian opposition groups based there.

Iranian Kurdish opposition groups based in Iraqi Kurdistan have been repeatedly targeted by Iran, which accuses them of activities against Tehran. There was no immediate claim of responsibility or independent assessment of the latest reported fire.
