Seven killed, six undergoing treatment after Delhi building collapse

Seven persons lost their lives and six others are under treatment after a five-storey building collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area Sunday, even as rescue teams continued to search the rubble, ANI reported.

The building, which housed a boys’ paying guest accommodation near Delhi University’s South Campus, collapsed at about 1:30 p.m. during repair and renovation work. Officials say they have rescued at least 12 people from the rubble.

Police said six injured persons are still under treatment and the search operation continued for someone who might still be trapped. Officials said more bodies were pulled from the rubble, raising the death toll to seven.

Emergency teams of Delhi Police, Delhi Fire Service and National Disaster Response Force were rushed to the spot. Rescue workers with sniffer dogs and heavy equipment searched the collapsed structure.

Police have booked the owner of the building. Authorities are looking into whether renovation work, including in the basement, may have played a role in the collapse. A magisterial inquiry has also been ordered.
