Unidentified armed men opened fire on a patrol in the Shatakai Dam area of Karak district in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province late on Tuesday, killing one police officer and seriously wounding another, Dawn news reported.

The attack took place when the officers were on routine patrol duty in the jurisdiction of the Sabirabad police station, Shaukat Khan, spokesman for the district police, said.

In the attack, Constable Zafran was killed while Constable Muhammad Imtiaz was seriously injured, Khan said. He said their body and the injured officer were taken to a hospital.

Following the attack, a heavy contingent of police led by District Police Officer Imran Khan reached the area and cordoned off the site, the police spokesperson said. As authorities searched for the attackers and monitored suspects’ movements, additional personnel were stationed at various points.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the assault. The incident comes as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa continues to face violence related to militancy.
