Delhi tightens security ahead of BRICS summit, 15,000 police deployed

Delhi is deploying some 15,000 police and extra paramilitary personnel across the capital as security is tightened ahead of the BRICS summit starting Friday.

That larger security operation involves about 30,000 personnel, with Delhi Police and paramilitary forces deployed at the summit venue, hotels, airport routes and other key locations, officials cited by local media said.

Particularly in Chanakyapuri, where many visiting leaders are expected to stay, security has been increased. Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled to arrive on Sept. 12, while Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to arrive on Sept. 11, reports said.

Additional senior officers have been deployed at the hotel where Putin is expected to stay, and the Delhi Police Special Cell has been tasked with making security arrangements for Xi. Officials said that verification checks have also been performed on hotel staff.

The two-day summit will take place at Bharat Mandapam from Sept. 12-13. Police have planned traffic diversions and restrictions and more than 35 major roads have been identified on which restrictions may be imposed.

Authorities have asked residents to remain vigilant, cooperate with security personnel and report any suspicious activity during the summit period.
