Iranian strikes damage at least nine US aircraft at Jordan air base, CBS reports

At least nine American military aircraft were damaged in Iranian strikes at a Jordanian air base hosting American troops, CBS News reported, citing unnamed US officials in the latest spat between Washington and Tehran.

The strikes on Tuesday night damaged an A-10 Thunderbolt aircraft, which lost a wing, while about eight F-15 fighter jets sustained minor damage, CBS reported. The report said the damaged F-15s later were put back into service. Reuters also reported that same assessment, citing CBS correspondent Jennifer Jacobs.

The strike targeted the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in eastern Jordan, an installation critical to US military action in the area. In the wider conflict, Jordan has several times shot down Iranian missiles and drones, as Tehran has targeted American military bases and other sites aligned with the US.

Earlier attacks on the kingdom caused limited damage and no reported casualties, according to Jordanian authorities, who said their air defences intercepted most of the missiles.

The strike is the latest in a sharp escalation of fighting between Iran and the United States. Washington has launched strikes against Iranian oil tankers and Iran has fired missiles at US military sites and pledged more to come.
