Sikkim says all eight residents stranded in Nepal return home safely
All eight of the residents of India’s Sikkim state stranded in Nepal after devastating floods in late August have returned home safely, the state government said.
The residents were among the Indians caught up in floods and landslides that struck Nepal on Aug. 26, causing destruction and cutting off roads and communications in several places.
Recent reports say floods caused by a major glacier-related disaster near the Nepal-China border have killed more than 1,300 people and left thousands missing. Rescue operations are underway in several affected areas including hydropower projects, where workers are still missing.
India has also helped Nepal in rescue and relief operations. The Ministry of External Affairs said that 166 Indian nationals had recently been rescued and hundreds were still missing amid the ongoing search efforts.
The return of the Sikkim residents has brought relief to their families as authorities continue efforts to trace other Indians affected by the disaster.
