Seven former Australia captains urge Foreign Minister Penny Wong to raise Imran Khan concerns

Seven former Australian cricket captains have written to Foreign Minister Penny Wong urging her to raise concerns with Pakistan over the detention and alleged mistreatment of former Prime Minister and cricketer Imran Khan, ESPNcricinfo reported.

Allan Border, Greg Chappell, Ian Chappell, Belinda Clark, Kim Hughes, Mark Taylor and Steve Waugh all signed the letter. The ex-captains said their appeal was humanitarian, not political and cited concern over Khan’s health, medical care and access to family and legal counsel.

Reports said they were writing “not as diplomats or political figures but as former captains who felt compelled to speak up”.

Khan, 73, has been in detention since 2023 on corruption charges, which he denies. His detention has repeatedly raised alarms among former cricketers around the world, with another group of 22 former captains appealing to the Pakistan government last month over his medical treatment.

The Australian captains have asked Canberra to raise the issue with Pakistani authorities, saying their intervention is based on concerns about Khan’s welfare, not the legal merits of his cases..
