Iran says Kharg Island blasts linked to destruction of unexploded ordnance
An official warned residents that the blasts are part of a controlled disposal operation and that explosions may be heard on Iran’s Kharg Island as authorities destroy unexploded ordnance on Wednesday.
The explosions are expected as Iranian authorities clear the area of unexploded munitions, the official said.
Kharg Island, a major Iranian oil export facility in the Persian Gulf, has seen increased security amid the broader regional conflict.
Authorities have been undertaking clearance and disposal operations to remove unexploded ordnance and reduce the threat of remaining munitions.
The warning comes amid continuing tensions in the Persian Gulf and heightened sensitivity to reports of explosions in Iran. Due to the strategic importance of Kharg Island, any explosions heard there or nearby could initially prompt worries about renewed military activity.
Officials said that the explosions that occurred during the disposal work should not be interpreted as proof of a new attack.
