More than 50 children feared under rubble in Gaza, Civil Defense says
More than 50 children are believed to be trapped under the rubble of a collapsed building in Gaza, while rescue teams continue searching for victims, the Gaza Civil Defense spokesperson told Al Jazeera.
The spokesperson said Israel was not letting heavy equipment into the Gaza Strip, making it difficult for rescue crews to operate.
“Our teams are still working to recover victims,” a spokesperson told Al Jazeera.
The danger could spread beyond the collapsed building, he warned, saying many structures throughout the Gaza Strip are in bad shape and could also collapse.
“We fear a repeat of today’s scene given the large number of dilapidated buildings,” he said.
“The Strip is now going through a dangerous and sensitive phase,” he continued.
The comments came as Palestinian rescue workers continued their efforts to pull people from buildings that were destroyed or damaged during the fighting. According to the United Nations, restrictions on equipment such as excavators are impeding large-scale recovery efforts in Gaza.
