Araghchi holds talks with Qatari mediators amid US push for nuclear deal

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met Qatari mediators in New York as diplomatic efforts to end the conflict with the United States continued, while Washington said any agreement would have to address Iran’s nuclear programme.

The talks focused on new ideas put forward by Qatari mediators, with Araghchi saying the proposals would be conveyed to Washington and that Tehran was awaiting a response, according to Iranian and regional officials.

“We are waiting for the mediators to convey the definitive views to us and we will make a decision based on them,” Araghchi said, according to Reuters.

The discussions are linked to an Iranian proposal for reopening the Strait of Hormuz and restarting nuclear negotiations. Tehran has tied reopening the vital waterway to conditions including an end to hostilities, sanctions relief and the lifting of a US naval blockade.

A US official said indirect talks with Iran had remained “positive and constructive” but no agreement would be reached without addressing nuclear issues. President Donald Trump has separately said he expects further talks this week.
