Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has accused “foreign hands” of inciting violence in protests against his resignation that entered a fourth day as riot police fought with student protesters in the Albanian capital, Reuters reported.

Earlier today, thousands of young Albanians gathered in the streets and threw stones at the police, who then used tear gas and water cannons in front of the Education Ministry, Reuters reported.

“This is not a student phenomenon”, Rama said in a video message, noting, “in the shadows there are foreign hands that do not want us to be at peace”.

Rama has faced protests demanding his resignation due to government corruption, the state of the university and increasing educational expenses. Unrest is also affecting other cities, such as Elbasan, Shkodra and Korça.

It comes after months of peaceful demonstrations against a luxury development for a coastal resort, established by Jared Kushner, son-in-law to US President Donald Trump. Critics say the development has become a symbol of corruption and the sale of public resources to wealthy interests.

Authorities said 160 people were arrested during the violent protests on Thursday night. During the wider protests, protesters attacked government buildings, banks and businesses.

Rama, who last year secured a fourth term in office, has dismissed demands for his departure, insisting that his government will tackle genuine grievances as it continues to pursue Albania’s EU membership by 2028.
