Separate incidents of firing spark widespread protests in Imphal; police use tear gas to disperse demonstrators outside CM’s residence

Imphal: Fresh violence in Manipur claimed at least four lives in two separate incidents between Sunday night and Monday, triggering widespread protests and disrupting normal life in Imphal.

Angry residents carried the bodies of two victims to Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh’s high-security residence, demanding action against those responsible. Police later removed the bodies and used tear gas and batons to disperse the protesters.

The first incident occurred during a musical programme in an area inhabited by Meiteis and Pangal Muslims. Clashes involving stone-pelting and gunfire reportedly left several people injured. A 24-year-old man subsequently succumbed to bullet injuries.

In another incident near Khamenlok in Imphal East district, suspected militants allegedly opened fire on villagers collecting firewood in the nearby hills. Initial reports said three people were killed and several others injured.

Police sources said Kuki militant groups were active in the region. Local MLA Thokchom Lokeshor Singh alleged that Assam Rifles personnel had assured the villagers of protection before they ventured into the area.

Singh demanded immediate intervention and the removal of the nearby Suspension of Operations (SoO) camp, identified as Sinai Camp.

Meanwhile, security personnel secured the attack site, while the chief minister visited the injured at Raj Medicity Hospital.

The violence has renewed concerns over ethnic tensions between the Meitei and Kuki communities, which have remained strained since clashes erupted in May 2023.
