Indian nationals residing in or visiting France have been advised to keep a close watch and stay away from protest sites in view of violent protests, regional curfews, and anticipated fresh protests across the country.

In a safety advisory issued by the Indian Embassy in Paris on Wednesday, Indian nationals have been advised to stay away from large groups and crowds, adhere to instructions issued by French authorities and stay updated on the state of public transport.

“Given the recent developments and the locally imposed curfews in France, stay alert and take the necessary precautions,” the embassy said on X.

It further recommended that people should stay tuned to local news and look out for announcements from the French government and the local Paris transport agency, RATP.

The announcement preceded planned additional protests on Saturday, Oct. 24, after unrest, damage to property and fights with police broke out at protests against the rising cost of living and public services, media reports.

The French government has stepped up security in a number of areas and imposed localised curfews to stop more violence. President Emmanuel Macron said the government would apply available legal measures to prevent a recurrence of the violence.

Indian nationals could turn to the Embassy of India in Paris or the Consulate General of India in Marseille for Emergency assistance.
