Jamia Millia Islamia condemns graffiti, moves to identify those responsible
Police increased security at Jamia Millia Islamia University after security staff in the institution discovered slogans such as “Free Kashmir” and “Free Sharjeel Imam” scribbled on its walls. Consequently, the slogans provoked controversy amid the student protests.
There were also reports of slogans directed at the RSS, ABVP and the vice chancellor of the university, The Indian Express reported.
The university administration denounced the graffiti and said it was seeking to identify the culprits.
“It is highly condemnable. The university is searching for the writer of these slogans. “Whoever is involved will face strict action,” a university official told News18.
Police guarded the outside of the campus and security was heightened inside. Students were, according to reports, frisked before being permitted to enter departments and centres.
The episode occurred in the wake of a student agitation that commenced on Oct. 12 when the protesters demanded the reinstatement of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union that was elected and the election schedule for the 2026-27 academic session. The union was dissolved in 2006.
The graffiti has come under fire from the ABVP, which has called for action against the perpetrators of the incident. It was not known right away who had scribbled the slogans.
The perpetrators continue to be sought and the walls are being repainted.
