Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Police has advised people to stay alert while communicating with strangers online and warned them against clicking suspicious links or sharing one-time passwords (OTPs), bank details and other personal information.

In an online safety advisory, the police highlighted common methods used by cybercriminals and urged people to verify messages and requests before responding or sharing sensitive details.

The police also introduced the SMART rule — Stop, Make Sure, Ask, Respect and Tell — to encourage people to remain cautious while using digital platforms.

The advisory warned people against clicking unknown links offering prizes, blindly trusting messages from unfamiliar accounts or sharing confidential information in response to urgent requests.

People have also been advised to check the authenticity of online messages and communications before taking any action to avoid falling victim to cyber fraud.

The police said that anyone who loses money in an online fraud should immediately contact the national cybercrime helpline at 1930 or report the incident through the official website, cybercrime.gov.in.

The advisory is part of the police’s efforts to raise awareness about cyber safety and encourage responsible behaviour on digital platforms.
