Modi congratulates Lula on re-election, vows to deepen India-Brazil ties
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the re-elected Brazilian President Lula on his victory and assured to deepen the strategic partnership and enhance cooperation for the benefit of the developing world.
In a post on X on Monday, Modi congratulated Lula for his “historic re-election victory” and called the leftist leader his “dear friend”.
“India is also looking forward to working with him to further deepen and broaden the multi-faceted India-Brazil Strategic Partnership,” the prime minister added.
“The two countries will continue to deepen cooperation in all areas and pursue the priorities of the Global South,” he said.
“Together we will deepen our cooperation in diverse areas, pursue the shared priorities of the Global South and help shape an inclusive, fair, and sustainable international order,” said Modi.
Brazil’s former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will return to the country’s top office for a fourth non-consecutive term after winning Sunday’s presidential run-off election against right-wing Senator Flávio Bolsonaro.
The win was met with praise from leaders across Latin America, including Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who proclaimed the Brazilian people had won a victory for democracy.
India and Brazil are both major developing economies who want to work towards stronger cooperation on trade, sustainable development and other global issues.
