Several injured as vehicles in Rahul Gandhi’s convoy hit ambulance
According to police, the accident took place near Haliyapur, around 100 km from Lucknow. The five vehicles involved were travelling at the rear of the convoy. The injured included Congress party workers and security personnel.
CCTV footage from the accident site showed the ambulance in the right-hand fast lane, while several vehicles were closely packed in the other lanes. The footage also showed a Scorpio SUV with its bonnet badly damaged after the collision, appearing to have stopped in front of the ambulance.
Rahul Gandhi had arrived at Lucknow airport earlier in the day before travelling by road to Sultanpur, around 135 km away. The accident occurred when the convoy was approximately 35 km from its destination.
Gandhi was scheduled to appear before a special MP-MLA court in Sultanpur in connection with a defamation case over his alleged objectionable remarks against Amit Shah, who was the BJP president at the time.
The court was expected to pronounce its verdict on Monday, and Gandhi’s physical presence was required for the proceedings.
The case dates back to August 4, 2018, when BJP leader Vijay Mishra, a former chairman of the Sultanpur District Cooperative Bank, filed a complaint against Gandhi over his alleged remarks about Amit Shah.
The remarks were reportedly made during an election rally in Bengaluru ahead of the 2018 Karnataka Assembly elections.
