New Delhi: Jammu and Kashmir recorded nine police personnel deaths in the line of duty between September 1, 2025, and August 31, 2026, matching Madhya Pradesh and ranking among the states and Union Territories with the highest reported toll, according to figures shared at the Police Commemoration Day Parade in New Delhi.

Across the country, 154 police personnel lost their lives while serving during the same period, including three from the Delhi Police.

The figures were shared during the Police Commemoration Day Parade held recently at the Parade Ground of New Police Lines in Kingsway Camp, Delhi. The event was organised by the Delhi Police to honour personnel who died while serving their respective forces during the period.

The ceremony opened with a solemn tribute as the Martyrs’ Book was brought to the parade ground in a slow march. The guard presented a salute, and officers paid their respects before the book was placed on the podium. Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar read out the names of the deceased personnel from Delhi and various state and central police organisations.

Among the states, Bihar recorded the highest number of fatalities, with 12 personnel losing their lives. Madhya Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir reported nine deaths each, while Assam, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh recorded six fatalities apiece.

Karnataka, Rajasthan and West Bengal lost five personnel each, followed by Haryana and Telangana with four each. Jharkhand reported three deaths, while Gujarat, Maharashtra and Punjab recorded two each. Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Kerala, Manipur and Uttarakhand reported one fatality each.

Among central forces, the Border Security Force (BSF) recorded the highest toll, with 25 personnel killed in the line of duty. The Indo-Tibetan Border Police reported nine deaths, followed by the Railway Protection Force with eight and the Assam Rifles with six. The Sashastra Seema Bal lost five personnel, the Central Industrial Security Force four and the Central Reserve Police Force two. Fire Services, Civil Defence and Home Guards together accounted for one death.

All three Delhi Police personnel who died during the period lost their lives in road accidents while performing official duties.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Ashok Kumar, posted at Mohan Garden police station in Dwarka district, died on December 24, 2025. He was returning after completing his duties under Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) Stage IV when he met with an accident. He was taken to RTR Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Constable Sandeep Dahiya died on August 5, 2026, while returning from Jaipur after an official assignment. The government vehicle he was driving met with an accident on the Mumbai-Delhi Expressway, within the jurisdiction of Jaisinghpur Police Post in Haryana’s Nuh district. He was taken to Shaheed Hasan Khan Mewati Government Medical College in Nalhar, Nuh, where he was declared dead.

Constable Mohar Singh Meena died on January 15, 2026, after sustaining fatal injuries in a bus accident on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. He had travelled to Rajasthan’s Alwar district on government duty.

Following the parade, the Martyrs’ Book was carried from the dais to the memorial in a slow march, where Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar laid a wreath in honour of the deceased personnel.

Former Delhi Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi also paid tribute, alongside former police commissioners T.R. Kakkar, R.S. Gupta, Neeraj Kumar, S N Shrivastava, Rakesh Asthana and Sanjay Arora.

Serving and retired Delhi Police officers and personnel joined the ceremony to pay their respects to those who lost their lives while serving the country.

The annual commemoration honours police personnel whose lives were lost in the line of duty and recognises the risks they face while maintaining public safety and enforcing the law.

Intelligence Bureau (IB) Director Dr Mahesh Dixit paid rich tributes to cops who laid down their lives in the line of duty, revealing that 154 police personnel died serving the nation over the past year and 36,852 have made the ultimate sacrifice since Independence.
