Pakistan Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif meets U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance on the sidelines of the US-Iran technical-level talks in Burgenstock, Switzerland, on June 21, 2026.

US. President Donald Trump has authorised Vice-President JD Vance to make contact with Iran regarding the nation’s supply of medicine, US President Donald Trump has authorised Vice-President JD Vance to contact Iran over the country’s medicine situation as diplomatic talks to end the eight-month war persist amid the risk of new military strikes.

“We need help with medical supplies and other things,” Trump told reporters on Wednesday. “He asked me what I thought. I said, ‘If you want to do that, that’s fine.”

Trump said the outreach was intended to help people requiring medical assistance, denying that he had instructed Vance to restart peace negotiations.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Vance had written to the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Mohsen Rezaei, in an attempt to reopen negotiations.

The diplomatic exchanges come as Washington mulls over additional military measures following the US midterm elections on Nov. 3. The conflict has disrupted regional security and energy supplies while soaring fuel prices have further added to economic woes.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that Tehran was in ongoing communication with mediators regarding suggestions to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and bring the hostilities to an end, Al Jazeera reported.

The new outreach indicates a window for negotiations however, major schisms about Iran’s nuclear programme, US sanctions and the terms for ending the war persist.
