US President Donald Trump ridiculed a Reuters journalist for his appearance after being asked about his health and why he pulled out of a campaign trip to Kansas, and contrasted his comments about Republican candidates’ looks on the campaign trail for the midterm elections.

The conversation happened on Thursday when Reuters reporter Jacob Bogage enquired whether cancelling the planned Kansas rally was linked to travel fatigue.

“But honestly, I don’t feel much different than I do right now,” he said, before lashing out at the journalist.

“Look at this guy. He’s way out of shape,” Trump said, adding: “You are disgusting. Put yourself in shape. You look like hell.” Trump also criticised Reuters, calling the news agency “terrible”.

The president’s remarks came days after he praised Republican candidates for their physical appearance at a campaign rally in Kentucky on October 17.

Trump said of congressional candidate Ed Gallrein, a former Navy SEAL: “Take a look at this beautiful guy.”

Additionally, he called Ohio Senator Jon Husted a “good-looking guy” and Georgia Republican candidates Mike Collins and Rick Jackson.

Trump has cancelled planned campaign appearances in Kansas and Iowa ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, opting instead for virtual rallies. (Reuters, Associated Press)
